Round trip with culture and adventure in Costa Rica

This is an amazing experience-trip where you will have a unique meeting with a family from the protected tribe of Cabecar Indians in their own homes in the jungle of Barbilla. You will also visit both the Caribbean Ocean and the Pacific Ocean where you will see and experience the wonderful animal- and nature life of Costa Rica.

The trip starts in Tortuguero where you will experience the Caribbean ocean and go on river boat trips to see turtles, monkeys, crocodiles, etc. After this you travel on to the untouched jungle of Barbilla for a visit with an Indian family with Marine Hedström, our Swedish guide and interpreter. She stays and lives since many years in Barbilla with the Cabecar Indians as neighbors.

The trip then continues up the mighty volcano Arenal with a bath in springs heated by the volcano and ends with a vacation on a white Pacific beach in the sun paradise of Flamingo.

Our journey 16/2 – 3/2 2016 was a wonderful experience with a lot of activities. We started in the mountains with rainforest and exciting jungle, where we got to experience suspension bridges, ziplines, colibries and butterfly park in Selvatura Park. From the active volcano Arenal, there were many hot springs that we took the opportunity to enjoy. Equipped with flashlights we were out on night hike in the jungle and got to see both snakes, frogs and sloths etc.

The journey was cruel! fishing guides are absolutely fantastic!

We had cannon weather, got good with fish and had a great time. First days we stayed at the Montelaguna hotel which was very nice, good food and nice treatment of staff and owners. The last days were at home at the fishing lodge which Was extremely homely and with super service!

The plan for the tour

Day 1: Welcome to Costa Rica

Pick-up at the airport in San Jose and transfer to hotel Barcelo Palacio, 15 min from the airport for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Tortuguero National Park

Now the adventure begins, you leave San Jose early in the morning to make your way down to Tortuguero on the Caribbean side of the country. even the bus trips throughout Costa Rica are an amazing experience, you will see a variety of nature and fantastic views as you travel between the different destinations throughout your journey Once you’ve arrived at the hotel, which is located on an island in the middle of the national park’s river delta and made yourselves at home, you will go on the first included excursion and visit the small village of Tortuguero and the Caribbean Sea. Day 3: Tortuguero

On this day you can make two more excursions and be able to see lots of animals and nature. The first excursion is a river boat trip through the river delta where you will be able to see, among other things, turtles and crocodiles. After lunch there will be a final tour that is a hike in the jungle around the hotel. Here you get another image of the mighty nature in Tortuguero.

Day 4: Transfer to Barbilla National park

On this day you move on to Barbilla and home to Marine Hedström’ farm in the middle of the rain forest where you will get first rate service and wonderfully cooked food three times a day made by Marine and her family. Here you will live in Marine’s guest houses on the farm, which are simple but incredibly cozy. In the afternoon you will visit Marine’s butterfly garden where she breeds butterflies and sends all over the world, including Haga Butterfly house in Stockholm.

Day 5: Hike in the jungle of Barbilla

On this day you will make a wonderful hike into the untouched nature of the national park. This is an all-day tour and you’ll be bringing lunch to enjoy by the beautiful Tapir River. This is a bit of a demanding hike, but with normal fitness levels and some fighting spirit there won’t be a problem at all. But it’s worth all the trouble because the nature is so beautiful and with a little bit of luck you can see lots of animals here too, depending on how quiet you are on your hike through the jungle. Day 6: Cabecar Indians

Today we get to the high light of the journey as you get to come with Marine to one of the Cabecar families at the edge of the forest and visit their simple home, Jutsini. Here you will get a closer look at their lives and life stories and, with the help of Marine as interpreter, speak to them yourselves. This is a unique opportunity; Marine finished a Sida project in 2012 that she worked on for the last 7-8 years. She made the first text books on the Cabecar language and by the help of the tribal leader made a written language and for the fall semester 2012 the first Cabecar children started in a school with their own language on the curriculum.

Day 7: Arenal Volcano

After breakfast we travel through a wonderful landscape on our journey towards the mighty volcano Arenal. Once at the hotel Montereal, you have the afternoon free to stroll around in the wonderful tropical garden or take a trip to the small village of La Fortuna.

Day 8: Arenal Volcano

This day is full of opportunities and you can choose from lots of excursions like visiting the magnificent waterfall of La Fortuna, taking a guided tour around the volcano, or swimming in the mineral springs heated by the volcano. recommend you to make this all-day excursion: Adventure day around the Arenal volcano

Day 9-14: Flamingo Beach

Now the last part of your adventure begins, from Arenal you go to Flamingo´s white Pacific beach. Here you can enjoy the sun on either the long beach or at the hotel’s pool area. This is a perfect end to your journey. If you hunger for more adventures you can go on a Sunset Cruise, half a day catamaran-sailing on the Pacific Ocean where you can snorkel and with a bit of luck see both dolphins and humpback whales. Day 14: Travel to San Jose

In the afternoon you will return to San Jose and Barcelo Palacio for a last night before the flight home.
